Most tradie websites in Melbourne are quietly losing customers every day. It is not that they look terrible. Plenty of them look perfectly fine. The problem is that they are built without any understanding of how a potential customer actually behaves when they land on the page.
A customer looking for an emergency plumber in Coburg at 7pm on a Tuesday has about 15 seconds of patience. They are on their phone. They want to know that you are local, that you are available, and that you can be trusted. If your website does not tell them that instantly, they are calling someone else.
This guide covers what Melbourne tradies actually need from a website, and the common mistakes that bleed leads.
Make your phone number impossible to miss
This sounds obvious, but it clearly is not. The majority of tradie websites we audit bury the phone number in the footer, or make it a tiny line of text in the header. On a phone screen, the user shouldn't have to scroll to find it.
The phone number should be:
- Top-right navigation large enough to read without squinting
- A tap-to-call link on mobile using href="tel:+61XXXXXXXXX"
- A prominent CTA button in the hero section not just text
- Repeated before the footer visible again at the bottom of every page
Think about it this way: your customer is in the middle of a plumbing emergency. They found your site. The single action you want them to take is to call you. Every second it takes them to find your number is a second they might close the tab.
Build trust in the first 5 seconds
Melbourne customers are discerning. They've been burned by dodgy tradies before most of them have. Your website needs to do real trust work, fast.
Photos of your actual work
Not stock photos. Your own photos before and afters, finished jobs, your ute or van, your team on site. Real photos of real Melbourne jobs are worth ten times more than generic imagery. Even phone photos work if the quality is reasonable.
Google reviews, front and centre
If you have Google reviews, embed or quote them prominently on your homepage. A 4.8-star rating from 27 Melbourne customers tells a potential customer more than any copywriting can. If you don't have many reviews yet getting them is your immediate priority. Ask every satisfied customer.
Licence and insurance details
For licensed trades electricians, plumbers, gas fitters displaying your licence number and insurance status is an instant trust signal. Many Melbourne customers check for this. If your competitors don't show it and you do, you win.
Service areas spelled out
"Serving Melbourne's northern suburbs including Coburg, Pascoe Vale, Brunswick, Essendon and surrounds" is far more reassuring than just "Melbourne." It tells the customer you actually know their area.
SEO for tradies: target suburb + service keywords
Most tradie websites try to rank for "plumber Melbourne" or "electrician Melbourne." These terms are dominated by the big directories and established businesses. For a local tradie, they're largely a waste of effort in the short term.
What actually works: suburb + service combinations.
- Plumber Pascoe Vale
- Emergency plumber Coburg
- Hot water system Essendon
- Blocked drain Brunswick
- Plumber near Moonee Ponds
- Plumber Melbourne
- Best plumber Victoria
- Cheap plumber Australia
- 24 hour plumber
- Licensed plumber
To rank for suburb keywords, use them naturally in your title tag, H1 heading, and a few times in the body copy. Write for a human first, then check the keywords are present.
Pro move: Create individual pages for each suburb you serve a dedicated "Plumber Coburg" page, a "Plumber Brunswick" page, and so on. Each page targets that suburb specifically and can rank independently. This is one of the highest-leverage moves in local SEO.
Mobile design is non-negotiable
Over 75% of searches for local tradies happen on a mobile phone. If your website works poorly on mobile, you are losing the majority of your potential customers before they've read a word.
- Fast load time: Under 3 seconds on a 4G connection. Large uncompressed images are the most common culprit
- Large tap targets: Buttons and phone links need to be big enough to tap easily with a thumb minimum 44px height
- No horizontal scrolling: Anything overflowing off the right edge signals an unprofessional, untrustworthy site
- Readable text: Minimum 16px font size for body text on mobile anything smaller is a conversion killer
- Click-to-call on every page: The phone number must be tappable not text the user has to memorise and dial manually
Test it yourself: Open your website on your own phone right now. Can you find the phone number within 5 seconds? Can you tap it to call? Does it load quickly? If the answer to any of these is no, you're losing customers.
The 5 mistakes that cost Melbourne tradies customers
These come up repeatedly when we audit tradie websites across Melbourne. If your site has any of these, fixing them should be your immediate priority.
No Google Business Profile or an incomplete one
Your GBP is what puts you on Google Maps. For local searches this is often more important than your actual website. If you haven't set it up, or if it's half-completed with no photos and no reviews, you're essentially invisible to a large chunk of potential customers.
Using Wix or Squarespace for SEO-critical pages
These platforms make it easy to get a site up but they create real barriers to ranking on Google. Slow load times, poor technical SEO defaults, limited control over structure. Fine for a brochure site, but if ranking matters to your business (it should), they're holding you back.
No calls-to-action beyond the footer
Many tradie sites put a "contact us" button at the very bottom of the page. By then, the customer has already made their decision. You need CTAs throughout in the header, after describing your services, and before the footer. "Call us now," "Get a free quote," "Book an inspection today."
Generic copy that could describe any tradie in Australia
"We provide quality plumbing services with years of experience." Every tradie in the country says this. Instead, be specific the suburbs you serve, the exact services you specialise in, the types of customers you work with. Specificity builds trust and helps you rank for more targeted searches.
No proof of past work
Melbourne customers want evidence before they call. A gallery of before-and-after photos, a few case study paragraphs, or even captions like "replaced hot water system for a family in Essendon completed same day" do real conversion work. Without them, you're asking customers to take a leap of faith.
Quick-win checklist for Melbourne tradies
- Phone number visible in top navigation, clickable on mobile
- "Call now" or "Get a free quote" button in the hero section
- Real photos of your work not stock images
- Google reviews displayed prominently on the homepage
- Your service suburbs listed clearly on the homepage
- Title tag includes your service + your main Melbourne suburb
- Full address in the footer matching your Google Business Profile exactly
- Google Business Profile claimed, verified, and fully completed
- Site loads in under 3 seconds on mobile (test with PageSpeed Insights)
- Licence and insurance details visible on the page
- At least one CTA mid-page not just in the footer
- LocalBusiness schema markup added to the site code
If your site ticks all of these boxes, you're ahead of the vast majority of Melbourne tradies. If it misses several, there's meaningful revenue waiting for you on the other side of fixing them.
